January 2007 Newsletter

For our January 17th meeting, your HDI Ottawa Local Chapter Executive is pleased to announce that Air Force Captain Mike Clark will present a road to success from “Chaos to Order” implementing an ITSM that exploits ITIL Best Practices in a service desk environment.

“Before the introduction of AFCCIS, there was no single automated interface that existed between National Command Authorities and local Ops. There were several manual processes and some localized tools in place that met the need. However, we all understand how manual interfaces can introduce error and these were often were subject to breakdowns either from human, procedural or technological failures.”

“… we experienced a double loop of death in the change process”. “So,… what have we done about this insane situation? In early 2005, the AFCCIS In-Service Support Manager began looking at instituting a better way to provide Support to the AFCCIS Users that would take advantage of Industry Best Practices and provide a responsive, effective, efficient and economical support model.” “Now we come to look at what the AFCCIS In-Service Support Manager has been working on… a better support model that exploits ITIL Best Practices and addresses some of the failures of the existing support structures. We employed a 2-step “QuickStart” model to introduce the new tool and processes to DND. The 2 pilot quick start phases ran consecutively, one after the other within a controlled environment in production, extending the Service Support functionality used within the Assyst product.” He will tell you about the steps he followed, the benefits his team is starting to see, and tell you about the lessons learned.

Captain Michael Clark has been serving in the air force for over 26 years in a wide variety of functions and roles. Working at all levels of the Engineering Support structure from front-line technician to a Policy analyst and developer at National Headquarters, He has developed a broad perspective on how the military maintains its technological goodies and where there is room for improvements. Captain Clark has many interesting and relevant anecdotes and “how to” tips he is wiling to share.

Join us to hear about his experience in what we hope will be a very interactive.

The meeting will be held at the Élisabeth Bruyère Health Centre on Bruyère Street downtown Ottawa. There is parking on the street (1 & 2 hour meters) or in the Élisabeth Bruyère Health Centre parking lot.

We look forward to seeing you at our second meeting on January 17, 2007.
